The Original and Its Origin
The original recipe for Planter's Punch dates back to the Punches, which were widely known in the 17th century and followed the rule of "One of Sour, Two of Sweet, Three of Strong, Four of Weak", meaning one part sour (lemon or lime juice), two parts sweet (sugar), three parts strong (spirit), and four parts weak (water) (see wikipedia.org). Today's recipes have been modified in various ways, but they still follow this rule of thumb, often using different juices in place of water.
