Sangria
Sangría is a legally protected name in Spain and Portugal for a flavoured mixed wine drink. The bowl-like drink is made from red wine, pieces of fruit (citrus fruits) and fruit juice and is often mixed with brandy. Sangría is served cold in glass carafes or, when it is hot, it is also drunk diluted with water. In Spain, sangría is a simple party drink, similar to the punch in Germany or the punch in Great Britain. Since sangría is an easy to prepare punch, there are many variations.
A "Sangria Blanca", also known as "Clarea" in Spain, is based on white wine or sparkling wine (cava), and a version mixed with brandy is called "Zurra".
Sangaree is an ancient English word that refers to the same wine-based drink and was mainly used in colonial society in the British West Indies.
